You and your studies
What determines the success of a new game? Why do people of all ages find themselves glued to their computer screens for hours on end, trying to get the hang of a game? Are the graphics so compelling, is the storyline so captivating or is it the audio quality that mesmerizes the user? As a game programmer or visual artist, you will become an expert in developing high-quality games, using creative design concepts as well as graphic design skills and technology.
The games industry is very different from the ICT industry. Creativity is a critical aspect. You need to be visually oriented and you need to have good drawing and computer skills. What’s also important, is a sense of aesthetics and spatial aptitude. The most important thing is probably that you have to be enthusiastic, passionate even, about game development and programming.
What’s your talent?
|
3D Visual art:
This specialization is mostly dedicated to 2D and 3D art for games. You take courses in technical drawing, life drawing and designing terrains and buildings. The conceptual designs from these workshops are transformed into 3D art in Maya workshops. In the second year you focus on character modelling and character animation. Eventually, you get to design your own plan of study in order to specialize in one of the subjects. You create and maintain a portfolio, which will help you start your career in the games industry. |
|
3D Programming:
ICT-related subjects are the main theme of this specialization. First of all, you are instructed in
mathematics, to build competence in this area. In addition, you spend a great deal of time on programming in c++. This specialization also covers graphics programming, artificial intelligence, audio programming, game engine design and other game related tools. |
|
Art & Technology for Next Generation Entertainment:
The aim of this specialization is to prepare the next generation of designers, producers and developers for this industry. In the first year, you are taught about client technologies. In the second year, students make a choice for either Art or Technology. Artists learn to develop content in applications including Flash, Illustrator, 3D Studio Max and After Effects. Technology students focus on cutting edge client/server and mobile technologies, including programming PHP, integrating databases, and web-embedded or serious game creation by means of state of the art technology. In both the art and the technology track understanding digital entertainment is an important aim of the programme. You learn how to develop virtual communities and how to support them using the newest technology available. |
